Mount Rinjani National Park

The park is popular for the mountain climbing and trekking. It represents an important nature reserve and water catchment area. The park officially covers an area of 41,330 hectares within the park boundaries and surrounded by a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside the park. The mountain and its satellites form the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani). In 2008, the Indonesian government proposed to UNESCO that Mount Rinjani to become one of the world’s official geoparks. It was approved by UNESCO and Mount Rinjani has became the first geological park in Indonesia.

Mount Rinjani has obtained the World Legacy Award from Conservation International and Traveler (2004), and was a finalist for Tourism for Tomorrow Awards (2005 and 2008) from the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC).
Mount Rinjani or Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano in Indonesia on the island of Lombok. Administratively the mountain is in the Regency of North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Indonesian. It rises to 3,726 metres (12,224 ft), making it the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia.

On the top of the volcano is a 6-by-8.5-kilometre caldera, which is filled partially by the crater lake known as Segara Anak or Anak Laut (Child of the Sea) due to the blue color of water lake as Laut (Sea). This lake is approximately 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above the sea level and estimated to be about 200 metres (660 ft) deep. The caldera also contains of hot springs. Sasak tribe and Hindu people believe that the lake and the mountain are sacred and some religion activities are occasionally done in these two areas.

Best Time to climb Mount Rinjani

The best hiking time is during the April-November dry season and the trekking trails are generally closed during the rainy season. In recent years, the early months of the ‘dry season’ have become more prone to rain and you should be prepared to encounter heavy rain and low visibility with slippery tracks underfoot at any time, particularly in the afternoon.

It gets very cold on the mountain above 2,000 m and nears freezing at the summit. Warm clothing is an absolute must.
